Why bamboo?

Over 10 million trees are chopped down each year just to make toilet paper. That's why we use bamboo, it isn’t just soft on your bum. Bamboo is the world’s fastest-growing grass. It reaches full size in just 3-5 years and can be harvested every year without harming the plant. It gets better: bamboo produces 35% more oxygen than trees and can absorb up to 12 tonnes of CO2 per hectare each year. It even helps heal damaged soil by soaking up toxins.

Buy one roll, and we'll donate one to food banks

We believe that everyone deserves access to basic essentials. Food banks cite toilet rolls as an essential yet often overlooked item. When you buy a roll of Bamboo Bobbi, we donate a toilet roll to food banks. These rolls are added to food parcels to help people who really need them.

Got a question?

We are here to answer!

Foodbank donation

For every roll sold online, Bamboo Bobbi donate a eco-friendly recycled roll to UK foodbanks. All of our profits go to donating toilet roll to foodbanks.

We collect the donated rolls until we have enough to fill a pallet, ensuring an efficient delivery process. This way, we can maximise the impact of your purchase and minimize our environmental footprint during transportation.

Bamboo Bobbi is a passion project for The Intelligent Group, a Sheffield-based business. Their team generously volunteers their time, handling everything from warehousing to marketing. This means Bamboo Bobbi doesn't have paid staff, doesn't have directors, and doesn't have office and warehousing costs. Meaning every penny of profit we make goes to donating toilet roll to UK foodbanks.

Impact

Toilet paper produced from virgin forest trees is one of the most wasteful products, destroying whole forests for a single-use product. Regular toilet paper devastates 27,000 trees a day, roughly 9 million a year and releases 65% more carbon emissions than bamboo toilet paper. The chemicals in regular toilet roll contain chemicals that poison our waterways and damage marine life.

Bamboo is the world’s fastest-growing plant and is rapidly renewable. Bamboo plants grow very quickly, up to 3ft in one day and can be harvested within 3-5 years, in comparison hardwood trees take 30-60 years. Bamboo absorbs 5 times more carbon dioxide than trees and produces 35% more oxygen. Bamboo also requires no pesticides or fertilisers and only needs rainwater to grow.

Bamboo Bobbi is completely natural and free from bleach, chemicals, inks, dyes, scents and plastic.

We have looked at producing our toilet paper in Europe, but at the moment our calculations lead us to believe that this would not be the most sustainable method as road transportation is significantly increased leading to more carbon emissions.

If we did produce our toilet roll in Europe the FSC certified bamboo would still need to come from China, but it would mean it being sea freighted to Europe, then taken via road to the European factory, after production it would again be taken by road to the port, and then sea freighted to UK. We believe our current method is much more sustainable.

At Bamboo Bobbi we don’t mess around we truly are carbon neutral. Unlike others who only consider product-related emissions, we include everything from producing and transporting our product to office energy and team commuting.

Our office has implemented energy-efficient practices, investing in renewable energy and optimising our operations to minimize waste. Our team are encouraged to use public transport, carpool, or even bike to work whenever possible.

We report our carbon emissions monthly. By being open about our progress, we not only hold ourselves accountable but also inspire others to join us in the fight against climate change. We know that’s a long way away, so that’s why we calculate all our carbon emissions and offset our CO2 through ClimatePartner, they help us complete our corporate and product carbon footprint. ClimatePartner audits the results, validates the figures, and provides a tracking number to a database so the results can be accessed by third parties.

Why would we wrap our rolls? It's totally unnecessary.

We don’t use fancy, wasteful packaging or individually wrap our rolls like other companies do. This only adds weight, and uses additional resources like water, bleach and inks. Plus it increases costs for customers.

Bamboo Bobbi is completely plastic-free, vegan and all packaging is made from recycled materials.

FSC Certified means that all of our bamboo comes from and is made with 100% Forest Stewardship Council approved forest-based materials. Our certificate gets renewed every year to make sure our bamboo forests, factories and their employees are still being looked after to the correct standard.

If you are referring to the quality, then most definitely yes. If you are referring to the environmental impact then the answer is more complicated. UK recycled toilet paper generally has lower overall emissions compared to bamboo toilet paper, but recycled toilet paper generally isn't good quality. It feels rough and tends to break up easily while wiping, meaning you tend to use more!

Recycled toilet paper also contains bleach and chemicals that are bad for the environment and are known to cause skin irritation. Recycled content can become easily contaminated by glossy paper and plastic coatings which is why there is such a concern about BPA being present, a toxin with exposure linked to many health issues.

Bamboo benefits from having no added chemicals and coming from a natural source. Bamboo plantations offer a high-quality source of sustainable materials that rapidly regenerates, with a much greater carbon capture than the equivalent volume of trees. This allows continuous harvesting every 2-3 years without the need for pesticides and huge amounts of water.

Ultimately, we need to stop cutting down trees to use for disposable products. Trees are best used in the construction industry where the carbon is retained. If we used a combination of recycled paper coming from our waste packaging and virgin bamboo we could make a massive environmental difference.

Our paper isn't white, because we don't bleach our rolls....why would we?

Our rolls have no added chemicals, dyes or bleach, they are completely natural.

No, the pandas eat a completely different species of bamboo.

Product specific

The raw bamboo comes from Chishui, Guizhou Province 5 kilometres from where our factory is located. This is around 180km from the port in Chongqing. We ship by sea freight to the UK. Sea freight is recognised as one of the most carbon-efficient methods of transport available. We transport to our warehouse by road transport using the UK’s Most Sustainable Delivery Company. We know that’s a long way away, so that’s why we calculate all our carbon emissions and offset our CO2 through ClimatePartner. We are proudly carbon neutral.

No, Bamboo Bobbi doesn't contain PFA or Forever Chemicals. An external laboratory has conducted an independent report confirming our products don’t use PFAs. Please contact us if you would like to see a copy of this report.

Yes. Bamboo is naturally soft, hypoallergenic, antibacterial and antifungal, and is free from bleach, inks, dyes, scents. take a look at our review pages as many of our customers who previously struggled with traditional toilet paper have found Bamboo Bobbi makes their skin feel normal again.

Yes. Our toilet paper has been tested and it breaks down just like any other toilet paper. it is suited to both of these systems.

Yes. We don’t use any animal-derived ingredients. We also do not test on animals, and no animal testing takes place within our supply chain.

Are inner cores are slightly smaller than normal and are made from bamboo.

Yes. Being plastic-free is very important to us, we believe it is completely unnecessary, we feel that paper is the most sustainable choice.

Our toilet roll is of a similar size to most brands.

You will find it very difficult to compare toilet brands because they all have different sized sheets, different numbers of sheets, different plys and different sized cores.

It’s no good having more sheets if you have to take 2 or 3 for every one of another type of paper.

At Bamboo Bobbi we have attempted to make sure that each sheet is of an optimal length and thickness to prevent wastage.

Ultimately, it would be better if manufacturers specified the length and width of the roll so a proper comparison can be made.
